About the Reno-Sparks Area . . .

...Nevada - pristine high deserts and glorious mountain vistas - some of nature's finest artwork. Some of the wonders are breathtaking, others offer a feeling of peace. You'll find a sense of pride in the people who live here. What makes people want to stay in Reno for a lifetime? There's a special blend of urban sophistication and old west charm, combined with fresh mountain air that's irresistible.

A small brass marker in downtown Reno defines the spot where Reno began. The first settlement in the area was a toll station and bridge constructed in 1859-60, later known as Lake's Crossing. Charles Crocker of the Central Pacific sold the first town lots in 1868 naming the town Reno after a friend Union General Jesse L. Reno, killed in the Civil War. Now another bridge spans the Truckee River, which boasts the new Raymond L. Smith Truckee River Walk. The walk attracts strollers and hosts civic celebrations.

The Washoe County Court house holds memories of Reno's time period as the "Divorce Capital". In downtown Reno you'll find, as well, the Washoe County Library, the Nevada Museum of Art, National Automobile Museum, Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, and Reno's cherished arch with 1600 bulbs announcing that this is The BIGGEST LITTLE CITY IN THE WORLD.

A stone marker, in a floral setting, announces the University of Nevada Reno, established in 1874. Mackay Stadium rests on a hill's summit. Further north on Virginia Street, are the Nevada Historical Society, the Fleischmann Planetarium and the Lawlor Events Center. Nearby are San Rafael Park, Truckee Meadows Community College and the Desert Research Institute. Reno/Tahoe International Airport has experienced phenomenal growth. It plays an important role in Reno's tourism industry with passenger loads increasing significantly along with increases in flight volume. Enter Reno at your own risk... you may never want to leave!
